Andrew Hairs, the Managing Director of executive recruitment company Monroe Consulting Group that operates in emerging markets throughout the Asia-Pacific, will feature as a guest presenter at a Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club (JFCC) event on expatriate workers in Indonesia on Thursday, May 12.
The JFCC Panel Discussion on Foreign Recruitment will also feature Lin Neumann, managing director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia (AmCham Indonesia), and Titin Supenti, the head of the Analysis and Licensing of Foreign Workers Department at the Manpower Ministry.
“Indonesia's labour market is one of the most restrictive in Southeast Asia, and it remains difficult to import foreign labour, even with free movement of skilled labour under the ASEAN economic community,” the JFCC says. “Recruiting and retaining workers with the right skills remains one of the biggest challenges facing firms in Indonesia.”
Mr Hairs said he would be offering a wide-ranging presentation on bridging the talent gap with foreign workers in Indonesia, followed by a question and answer session from the floor.
He said key points that would be covered included the under-supply of skilled executives in Indonesia, the reasons for this and the often negative impacts on businesses. These negative impacts included a “talent war” where salaries for some professionals were increasingly rapidly, and the premature promotion of employees.
Mr Hairs said the primary focus would be on how Indonesia could best utilise foreign workers for the benefit of the country. Points to be discussed included not only the short-term benefits such as bridging the talent gap and increased knowledge transfer, but also ensuring the formation of fully compliant companies that make positive contributions within Indonesia, he said.
The JFCC welcomed journalist members, associate members, walk-ins (members) and non-members to discuss “recruitment issues in Indonesia, and the pace of labour-market liberalisation” in Central Jakarta at 10 am till 12 pm on Thursday.
