The recruitment of key executives was high on the agendas of a number of participants at the Philippines Ports and Shipping 2017 in Manila on Feb. 23-24. The important event is the largest biennial container ports and terminal operations exhibition and conference in the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

Executive recruitment consultant Jubie Bartolay, the assistant head of Monroe Consulting Group Philippine’s specialized Industrial Division, said shipping was a vital part of the BIMP-EAGA framework given the sea connections between the majority of cities in Southeast Asia and the wider Asia region.

“To maintain and enhance the region’s competitiveness, BIMP-EAGA is committed to encouraging the upgrade of seaports, foster improved shipping, and implement bilateral and multilateral agreements to aid cross-border activities,” Jubie said.

She said the depth of this resolve was on stark display at the Philippines Ports and Shipping 2017, which attracted more than 400 senior executives from world leading regional container shippers, cargo owners, shipping lines, freight forwarders, logistics companies, port companies, importers and exporters, terminal operating companies, and container terminal equipment suppliers, to name but a few.

In addition, the 9th edition of the event featured more than 50 exhibitors and 25 speakers analyzing the latest global and regional transport and logistics issues confronting shipping lines and cargo owners, she added.

“What was most interesting to myself as an executive recruitment consultant, was the need for executive search or headhunting services in a number of key areas in the sector,” Jubie said. “I met with a number of key decision-makers in the industry who say they often find it difficult to source and recruit the top-level executive talent their companies need to ensure they remain competitive, both regionally and globally.”

Colleague Liberty Molina Miranda said Monroe Philippines, part of the international award winning Monroe Consulting Group, had forged a number of key contacts with potential clients at the conference and was looking forward to helping these companies with their recruitment needs. “Monroe operates throughout Southeast Asia, and indeed the wider Asia-Pacific region, and specialize in helping our clients source hard-to-find talent at the specialized technical or executive levels,” Molina said.

Deborah Obispo, also with Monroe Philippines, said the recruitment company regularly attended tradeshows, conferences or exhibitions to ensure its consultants remained abreast of the latest news and events pertinent to the industries they served. Monroe specializes in executive recruitment in the areas of Industrial, Consumer Goods, Technology, Health and Professional, which covers banking, finance and insurance, she added.

“If you don’t understand your industry, the specific hiring needs demanded by the company, how to source and recruit talent as well as manage salary expectations, you won’t make it far,” Deborah said. “Monroe understands the companies and sectors in which we operate, and regularly place some of the most senior people in the most respected multinational companies in the world today.”

Anna Lee Manaig said there were a number of key areas where executive decision-makers were seeking to source talent. “There are a number of opportunities in the area of the development of new ports in the Philippines and Southeast Asia as well as technical specialists who can harness technology to improve the operations of port and container terminals,” the executive recruitment consultant said. “It’s a dynamic area and you need to be ahead of the curve or you will fall behind competitively.”
