Monroe Consulting Group is representing a reputable international environmental organization in the search for a highly qualified and motivated Sundaland Ocean Manager to lead and implement strategic ocean programs across the Sundaland ecoregion.
This role is responsible for driving program management excellence and ensuring that strategies, initiatives, and measurable outcomes advance marine conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable ocean development priorities. The position will oversee support for effective marine protected area (MPA) management within Fisheries Management Area (WPP) 572, covering North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and the Riau Islands, among other locations.
The role is based in Medan and reports directly to the Sundaland Program Director, with a dotted reporting line to the Jakarta-based Ocean Program Director.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of ocean conservation programs in the Sundaland region.
  • Oversee initiatives including marine protected area establishment and management, mangrove conservation and restoration, surf conservation, ocean science, and policy development.
  • Provide strategic and technical leadership to ensure effective program delivery in collaboration with field and national teams.
  • Review and refine work plans, KPIs, and monitoring frameworks regularly to ensure timely and impactful implementation.
  • Manage program budgets and prepare donor reports in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
  • Align program strategies with local government priorities, ecosystem needs, and community interests.
  • Develop funding concepts and proposals; identify opportunities for scaling impact and long-term sustainability.
  • Represent the organization at provincial forums and maintain strong relationships with government counterparts.
  • Lead multi-stakeholder collaboration with government agencies, NGOs, universities, private sector actors, and community-based organizations.
  • Serve as a recognized technical expert, promoting best practices in marine conservation and nature-based solutions.

People & Resource Management

  • Supervise and mentor program and project staff, including external partners.
  • Ensure timely delivery of program milestones and high-quality outputs.
  • Manage a significant and visible program portfolio with full accountability for budget and human resources.
  • Foster a high-performance, collaborative, and motivated team culture.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in marine conservation, fisheries, biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, rural development, or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of full-time professional experience in marine conservation or a related field, with demonstrated program and project management experience.
  • Proven experience managing multifaceted conservation projects in Indonesia, including community-based conservation, multi-stakeholder engagement, monitoring and evaluation, and proposal development.
  • Experience in ecosystem economic valuation is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills with the ability to balance detail orientation and big-picture vision.
  • Demonstrated leadership and stakeholder management capabilities across diverse audiences (government, NGOs, communities, private sector).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong reporting, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in dynamic, cross-functional teams.

Working Conditions

  • Based in Medan with travel to project sites and other locations as required.
