As AI automates routine tasks, the demand for human skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity is set to increase. A Deloitte study revealed that 74% of executives expect AI to be integrated into all enterprise applications within the next three years, highlighting the urgent need for upskilling. Successfully transitioning to AI-driven environments requires a strategic alignment of these efforts with organizational objectives.

Sudhanshu Duggal, CIO of Digital and Business Transformation at Forbes Technology Council outlined three key aspects of workforce preparation for AI:

  1. Align Skill Strategy with Business Goals: Organizations must ensure that their skill development strategies are in line with their business and digital strategies. Understanding consumer needs—whether they are patients, shoppers, or online users—is essential for driving impactful outcomes.

  2. Develop Digital Acumen and Data Literacy: A comprehensive program focused on digital acumen and data literacy is crucial. While AI can handle lower-end tasks, human intelligence still excels in areas requiring problem-solving, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence.

  3. Adopt a Holistic Approach: A holistic approach to working with AI is necessary to maximize ROI, efficiency, and creativity. This approach involves not just technological integration but also fostering a workforce capable of leveraging AI for better results.

Creating a Culture of Continuous Learning

To keep pace with AI-driven transformation, organisations must cultivate a culture of continuous learning. Shankar Nagalingam, VP of Human Resources at Lumileds shared insights from Deloitte's 2023 research, reinforcing the need for a robust skill gap analysis and the use of AI-powered tools to create personalized learning paths for employees.

He also emphasized the importance of a tiered AI education program tailored to different roles and skill levels, integrating ethics and responsible AI use into training. Engaging employees through gamification and interactive learning methods can significantly enhance retention and application of new skills. Training should focus on data interpretation, statistical analysis, and data visualization, empowering employees to ask the right questions and engage with AI effectively.

The Role of AI in Bridging Skill Gaps

Elle Green, Head of Partnerships and Growth at Become Recruitment Australia, discussed how AI could help bridge skill gaps and facilitate learning across various industries. As traditional customer service roles evolve, there will likely be a rise in customer success roles that manage AI-driven processes. AI can assist organizations in identifying skill gaps and creating personalized learning paths, shifting the focus from merely acquiring technology to building internal capabilities.

With the increasing adoption of generative AI and tools like ChatGPT, Green highlighted the need for organizations to help employees adapt by identifying core skills and creating tailored development paths. These personalized learning experiences not only retain talent but also keep employees engaged. Focusing on data-driven decision-making and soft skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and complex problem-solving will enhance collaboration between humans and AI.
